This year’s opening of the UAAP has broken away from the norm, as host Ateneo de Manila University held an Olympic style kick-off ceremony at the Marikina Sports Complex. Despite heavy rains, the opening festivities proved to be a success as Ateneo prepared an elaborate show, featuring dance numbers and drum line exhibitions, as well as a performance from rock band Sponge Cola. The following day, the basketball tournament officially began, with defending champion Ateneo beating Adamson University in the main game.
