The weekly roundup – Filipinos in the NBA

    Almost there...

While we’re waiting for the first Filipino to play in the NBA, let’s take pride that the first Asian coach to reach the NBA Finals is one of our own. Erik Spoelstra coached the Miami Heat past the Chicago Bulls, earning a seat in the finals together with the Dallas Mavericks. It’s a repeat of the 2006 NBA Finals, but this time with some new faces, and some new roles (Spoelstra used to be an assistant coach for Miami in 2006). Best of luck to the Filipino coach and his stalwarts, this would surely be another epic series.

Also, another Filipino may soon become a part of the NBA. Telco magnate Manny “MVP” Pangilinan is eying an investment in the Sacramento Kings, seeing a majority ownership of the ball club as one of his goals before retirement. Nothing is definite yet, as according to MVP, running an NBA team is a different game altogether, but it’s still welcome news, as it may pave way for more Filipinos in one of America’s premiere leagues.
